- =====================================================
- PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE ORDERING
- =====================================================
-
- There are no Bonus Points awarded for any items from this section
-
- There is a lot of interest in PC Shareware for the Archimedes so this
- directory contains lists of PC PD and Shareware, divided into rough
- categories with a few words describing each file. They are intended for
- people who are prepared to de-arc and install the software, although
- this is normally very easy. (See the file 'UNZIP').
-
- The 'proper' catalogue of tried and tested PC programs will continue and
- I shall be adding to it. These files are those which we have 'in stock'
- and can supply. Some are well known programs and work perfectly using
- the Emulator, others we have never tried so if you obtain a copy it's up
- to you, NO GUARANTEES.
-
- Some programs may appear more than once. Actual duplicates have been
- eliminated but earlier versions or 'zip' files with different names will
- not have been, so check if a there is a later version. Sometimes an
- earlier version may actually be better, which is one reason why I
- haven't eliminated all 'old' versions. Later versions often require
- 'better' hardware (eg. super VGA, extended memory, 386 processors, etc.)
- but 'old' versions would run on an 'XT' and so will work using the
- emulator. Others have 'grown' so that later version need either a hard
- disc or 1.44Mb floppy. This is really only likely to be true of graphics
- programs and not of 'business' applications.
-
- All these files (except the GIF files, which are already compressed) are
- in 'ZIP' or 'ARJ' format and that is how they are supplied with a copy
- of PKUNZIP or ARJ, ie. equivalent to the way we supply 'individual'
- Archimedes programs. We fill each disc and you will need to copy or
- unzip/de-arj them to another. This is how many PC Shareware libraries
- supply programs but the main difference is they normally charge at least
- £1.50 per file.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------
- There is a minimum charge of £1.50 per order.
- --------------------------------------------------------
- Please specify whether you want 720K or 1.44Mb discs
- --------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- Still more?
- -----------
- If your catalogue was supplied on a single 800K disc you will have only
- *VERY* a small part of the full PC catalogue. Even if it was supplied on
- two 800K discs or a 1.6Mb disc you will still have less than half of
- what we have available! If you want the full, unabridged, PC catalogue
- then it will cost you £1. If you already have one full disc of PC files
- then you can return this plus 50p for the full version.
-
-
- How to Order
- -----------
- This is VERY IMPORTANT. At the start of each line there is an
- identification code. The first three characters form an identification
- number which enables us to locate the file quickly. The rest is the name
- of the actual ZIP/ARJ/GIF file. Please give BOTH numbers when you order,
- exactly as in the file. Quite often the version number of the program
- forms part of the filename and you may find that with some popular
- programs a later version exists somewhere in the file.
-
- If you don't use the !PCOrder program to make up your order (any you'll
- get quicker service with less chance of mistakes if you do) please be
- careful when you write the filenames. We have to search through dozens
- of directories and thousands of files and if you make a mistake our job
- can be almost impossible. If possible use a 'slash zero' to distinguish
- between a zero and a capital 'O' and try to make sure that letters like
- 2's and Z's, 5's and S's and other similar characters are clearly
- defined. If we have too much trouble deciphering your writing we will
- just give up and return your order with a credit note. To be able to
- provide these programs at this price we MUST be able to process your
- order quickly and efficiently.
-
- If you received a 'cut down' catalogue on a single 800K disc then the
- !PCorder application may not have been included due to lack of space.
-
- Price is based entirely upon file size and disc space occupied.
-
- Important
- ---------
- The !PCorder program is designed to be used either on its own or in
- conjunction with the !Order program used for Archimedes format discs. To
- amalgamate an order for PC files with an Archimedes order save your
- PCorder selection in PCorder format (NOT as a text file). When you run
- the !Order program you can then drag this file to the Order icon and it
- will be added to your selection of Archimedes discs.
-
- Because PCorder is intended to be used in this way it does NOT take into
- account the £1 surcharge for orders from outside the European Postal
- Area. If you are outside this area and are NOT amalgamating your
- order in this way please add £1 to your order.
-
- Discaimer
- ---------
- APDL offers no warranty of any type with these programs. Although they
- are sold via an Archimedes library and are primarily intended for use
- with Archimedes PC emulators and PC cards we do not even guarantee that
- they will operate at all. Most of these files have never even been
- de-archived and looked at by APDL so although we ASSUME they are OK and
- actually work on a PC at this price we give absolutely NO GUARANTEE.
-
- Although we will normally try to give every assistance to customers,
- because of the very low price charged for these files the amount of time
- we can devote is severely limited. We assume that you are familiar with
- DOS and the use of the DOS CLI. If you are a novice DOS user then read
- the file 'Unzip?' and ensure that you understand it before ordering any
- of these programs. If in doubt DON'T order a lot until you are satisfied
- that you can actually de-arc them. If you have difficulties we will try
- to help but we will NOT give refunds because you are too inexperienced
- to sort out minor problems of this type.
-
- Our warranty is limited to the actual media. If a disc is fautly please
- return it and it will be replace free of charge. If an archive is
- damaged or corrupted in any way our warranty is limited to the cost of
- the individual archive. Occassionally an archive may give the message -
-
- 'Archive corrupt - use PKZIPFIX'
-
- This may not be an actual error. The archive may have been created using
- a ZIP format which is no longer directly supported by PKUNZIP. In this
- case you should use PKZIPFIX to correct the fault. We will NOT give
- refunds for archives which can be correctly de-arc'ed with the use of
- PKZIPFIX. Although a copy of PKUNZIP is supplied with each order
- (on every disc if there is room) PKZIPFIX is NOT supplied. If you don't
- have a copy it can be found on disc P309.
-
- If you do not feel competent to do this or do not have a copy of
- PKZIPFIX we will do it for you but you MUST return a disc containing
- ONLY the file which gives the error. This must be suitably packaged and
- contain a self addressed label and stamp(s) for return postage. If we
- can sucessfully fix the problem then your disc will be returned either
- with the corrected ZIP file or the de-arc'ed program (if it will fit on
- the disc). If we are unable to fix it then our warranty is limted to
- returning your disc with a credit note for the price of that file.
-
- GIF files
- ---------
- These are compressed images in GIF format. Unlike many of the pictures
- available on the Archimedes (most of which are low resolution ported
- from the A***a) they are normally VERY good quality images with high
- screen resolution and at least 256 colours. Usually this is shown as
- part of the description. This means they are BIG, which explains the
- comparatively high price.
-
- Unlike PC programs, which need to be supplied on DOS format discs, GIF
- files can be used by 'native' Archimedes programs and converted to
- Spritefiles using !Translator, !ChangeFSI, !FYEO etc. Normally they are
- supplied on 720K/1.44Mb DOS discs but we can supply on 800K/1.6Mb
- Archimedes format if required.
-
-
- Multi-disc programs
- -------------------
- Some programs consist of several files each intended to fill a 360K
- disc. Usually you will see (1/3) meaning disc 1 of a 3 disc set or (2/2)
- meaning disc 2 of a 2 disc set etc. Remember you will (probably!) need
- them all. Occasionally some discs may be 'extras and not required.
-
-
- Large Files
- ----------
- Some very large files are too big to fit onto a 720K disc and will
- therefore normally only be supplied on 1.44Mb. You will almost always
- find you need a hard disc to use these. The price 'break point' is
- £1.60. Items with this price just fill a 720K disc, so if it costs more
- than £1.60 IT WON'T FIT ON 720K.
-
- If you really do want one of these programs and have a hard disc but
- only an 800K drive then we can supply the file 'split up' and spread over
- two discs. This will come complete with a simple 'joining' program to
- put it together again and will cost 50p EXTRA. Don't forget, you must
- have a hard disc with a DOS partition.
-
- If you do not have a hard disc or hi density drive you could find that
- files priced at about 90p and upward expand when 'unzipped' so they
- won't fit on a 720K disc. If there is something you want that might be
- too big we may be able to supply it unzipped on as many 720K discs as
- necessary for TWICE the price shown. If we can't do this for any reason I
- will send a credit note. Remember that even if it will fit on a 720K
- disc if you only have one drive and there isn't room for the ZIP file
- plus the unzipped file on it's a real pain to unzip it. You might think
- that if it won't fit on a 720K disc then you won't be able to use it
- anyway but with many programs there is extensive documentation or
- 'overlays' and the actual code will fit. We will only do this for very
- large files, not for smaller ones which you can unzip yourself.
-
-
- Using PC Shareware programs
- ---------------------------
- Most of these programs have extensive documentation as text files. The
- better ones have this laid out properly with pages, index, etc. Some
- have a Batch File to print the instructions. If not you can just use -
-
- COPY <filename> PRN
-
- This will literally 'copy' the file <filename> to your printer, ie.
- print it. If you want to read the documentation first you will quite
- often find a program called 'LIST' on the disc. This lets you view a
- text file in a scrollable window. The syntax to run this is -
-
- LIST <filename>
-
- Alternatively you can use a good text editor to view the file. An
- alternative, and often easier if you aren't familiar with DOS, is to
- simply return to the Desktop and load the instructions in an Archimedes
- editor like Zap or Edit. You can easily use Search/Replace to delete all
- the cr's that aren't needed in Archimedes editors.
-
- Quite often you will find a Batch file to run the program. This is a
- file with a .BAT extension and is often called something like GO.BAT.
